General description

The Castlemaine was one of 60 Australian-built minesweepers (popularly known as corvettes) to defend Australia in World War II. She served in northern waters of Australia, the Pacific and Indian Oceans and the China Sea. Following on from her war service, she was eventually transferred to HMAS Cerberus, Flinders Naval Depot and used as a static training vessel.

She was gifted to The Maritime Trust of Australia in 1973 as a hulk. The Trust with volunteer support has faithfully restored the ship and it is now the last of the class still afloat.

The former crew's mess is now fitted out as a maritime museum with exhibits and memorabilia illustrating important aspects of Australia’s naval and maritime heritage. Exhibits are frequently changed. Open at Gem Pier, Williamstown Historic Seaport, from noon to 5pm at weekends.

For more information phone 61 3 9397 2363 weekends.
